At St Joseph’s we teach French across Key Stage 2 and believe we should enable all children to understand and communicate on a variety of subjects. We want children to understand the importance of learning a language and at the same time learn about the country and its culture; comparing festivals throughout the year with their own, and looking at special events happening in France.
Children are taught through a variety of media, with an emphasis on speaking and listening through songs and rhymes, games and fun activities. Reading in French is encouraged from Year 3, as is the use of bi-lingual dictionaries.
We aim to inspire the children with a love of language that is accessible to all and open their eyes to the world around us. We want them to go on to the next stage of their schooling as confident and capable language learners.
