Curriculum
We are dedicated to delivering 2 hours of high-quality physical education lessons a week. Our PE curriculum is balanced, varied and embedded in ensuring children develop fundamental motor skills.
This process begins in the Early Years were children are introduced to key skills such as; running, jumping, co-ordination, balance, agility, throwing and catching. These are acquired through discrete Physical Development lessons such as Smart Moves, Mini Yoga and Bike Balancability and through embedded activities in their indoor and outdoor classroom environment.
At KS1, children will begin to work on the skills developed in Reception. Through fundamental movement games, children become confident in their movement, specifically with agility, balance and coordination. Children then compete in team and individual games while understanding simple tactics for attacking and defending.
Alongside this, REAL PE lessons help support basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching.
At KS2 children will begin to grow in confidence when talking to others about P.E Through REAL PE they will continue to refine their basic movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination. Children will now have the opportunity to play a greater range of competitive games, for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis and applying basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
Through dance and gymnastics, children will develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.
School Games
At St Joseph’s we committed to working with School Games and out Catholic Partnership to keep competitive sport at the heart of our school and provide all of our children with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best. We also offer a variety of extra-curricular sporting activities to enrich our curriculum and equip children with the necessary skills to compete. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities builds character and helps to embed values and learner attributes such as determination, passion, honesty, self-belief, teamwork and respect. We currently hold a Gold School Games award and are currently working towards our Platinum award.
